MRH Scholarships Awarded
Three MRH seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships at an Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 19, 2014. Barry Greenberg presented the scholarships to Elizabeth Robberson, Essence Daniels-Brewer, and Marquise White. Two of the scholarships were paid for from the Club’s scholarship fund and one was funded by members making special donations. Thanks to Isaac, Leo, Bonnie, and an Anonymous donor for the additional $1,000. Our Club always takes pride in being able to make a difference in the lives of as many deserving seniors as we can.

Scholarships to be Awarded

The club will be presenting two $1,000 scholarships to two deserving Maplewood Richmond Heights students. On May 20 (7:00pm), Megan Owens and Morgan Patterson will be awarded the scholarships at the Academic Awards Night at the MRH High School. Both of these girls are very deserving and have worked hard all during high school. They both have a vision of what they want to accomplish after high school.

Project Eliminate - Taste of Maplewood Booth

One of the fundraisers our club had was at The Taste of Maplewood on Saturday,  May, 18, 2013. We sold raffle tickets with the winner getting a $50 gift card to one of Maplewood’s restaurants. We made $166 profit, and the winner of the $50 gift card was
Christian D. We thank Sam Heyman for his generous donation to pay for the booth. Thank you, Sam! And, thank you, to Phil, Jeff, Sam, Barry, Andrew, Jocelyn, and Bonnie for being at the booth.

Key Club Joint Meeting
We met with the members of the MRH Key Club on Wednesday, April 30. It was a fabulous meeting! There were 14 high school students there along with most of our members. This year the Key Club had 16 members all of whom had white shirts with the Key Club logo. The students seemed to take a lot of pride in being a Key Club member. Their sponsor, Lindsey Sontag, was also there.

After a delicious lunch (taken care of by our own Brian Adkisson), the students made a formal presentation to tell us about their first year. The Key Club’s mission includes service, building character, and acquiring leadership skills. Their service projects this year included helping at our Pancake Breakfast and raking leaves for elderly people in the neighborhood. They also wrote thank you notes to the troops, and collected food (Boxes for Breakfast Project) for the local food pantries which help provide weekend food for students in need.

We then all participated in a brainstorming session to help the students begin planning for next year. Ideas for service projects and building membership were among the items discussed.

Thanks to Brian Adkisson for diligently working to get the Key Club going and for getting it started with such “class.” The group certainly made a great impression on us. They made us proud!

Election of Officers

The club held the election of officers on May 15. The 2013-2014 officers are: Phil Johnson, President; Brian Adkisson, President-Elect; Jeff Johnson, Secretary/Treasurer. Bonnie Paulsmeyer will serve as Editor and Andrew Bolin will be managing the website.

Nancy Willimon Visits!
The Division 9 Lt. Governor, Nancy Willimon, and her husband, Pack, visited our club at our May 14th meeting. Nancy announced that there will be a Division 9 Council meeting at the West County Lanes on Saturday, June 28, from 9:00-noon. The Lt. Governor Elect election will take place along with a discussion of the Division sponsored raffle that was held earlier this year. Nancy also gave us a handout regarding Distinguished Club Criteria. She is encouraging clubs to apply for this and to work toward it.

On May 16, Dan Yates and his wife, Brenda, attended a lunch and dinner in the area for local clubs. Dan is the Governor Elect of the MO-ARK District. He takes over on October 1, 2014.

Annual Pancake Breakfast
Mark your calendars and save the date - November 15, 2014. We will be having our annual Pancake Breakfast on that Saturday at the MRH High School cafeteria.

Local, Well Loved, Business Commits a Portion of Sales to Maplewood Kiwanis
Strange Donuts, a recent addition to downtown Maplewood, has put their money where their (and our) mouths are. Being a good community neighbor, Strange Donuts committed 10 cents from every "Barry Greenberg" donut to the Maplewood Kiwanis. Their patrons purchased 3,400 of the chocolate and coconut baked goods to generate a $340.00 contribution to our club. They will be assigning a new creation every two weeks to a different cause to help other worthy organizations. Upcoming on their list is Girls on the Run,Big Brothers / Big Sisters and Sherwood Forest Camp. We thank them for their generosity and urge everyone to try their tasty creations and help save the planet.
Update: Strange Donuts donated $320 more to Maplewood Kiwanis. Barry Greenberg donuts were sold at a Taste of Maplewood and $.10 from each donut sold was pledged to our Club. Thanks to Strange Donuts for this wonderful contribution.
